"abstract_en": "This meta-analysis synthesized group-design studies of mathematics fact-fluency interventions for kindergarten through eighth-grade students with mathematics difficulties. Searches covering 1975 through June 2024 yielded 35 eligible studies published from 1990 to 2023 and 178 effect sizes. Programs included approaches such as cover-copy-compare, incremental rehearsal, repeated or distributed practice, explicit strategy instruction, and computer-assisted practice. The random-effects mean was Hedges' g = 0.76, indicating a moderate-to-large overall benefit, although a broad prediction interval from -0.60 to 2.12 signaled substantial variability across contexts. Moderator analyses identified differences associated with grouping, number of sessions, operation focus, and outcome type. Interventions with at least 30 sessions were stronger than those with fewer than 10 sessions in an adjusted comparison, supporting sustained rather than brief practice. A large-group advantage appeared, but it rested on only five studies and should not be generalized without replication. Programs addressing only addition or subtraction showed smaller effects than programs spanning both additive and multiplicative facts, and transfer to word-problem outcomes was weaker than improvement on direct computation measures. The review therefore supports structured, frequent opportunities to retrieve facts with feedback while warning that automaticity practice does not by itself guarantee broader problem solving. Reporting of treatment fidelity and participant characteristics was incomplete in portions of the literature, interventions were heterogeneous, and the prediction interval included null or negative effects. Consequently, teachers should use fluency as one component of a comprehensive mathematics intervention, monitor individual growth, and alter dosage or instructional strategy when repeated practice is not producing efficient and accurate recall.",

"abstract_en": "This systematic review examined experimental schema-instruction research for young children solving word problems, with particular attention to instructional implementation rather than only aggregate effects. Thirteen studies met the review criteria, representing approximately 2,100 students in grades 1 and 2; the search found no qualifying kindergarten experiment. Across studies, schema instruction generally improved word-problem performance. The reviewed interventions explicitly taught children to recognize underlying quantitative structures, represent those structures, select operations, solve, and check answers. Common supports included diagrams, meta-equations, gestures, and concise heuristics; some lessons contrasted intact or numberless stories and provided isolated practice identifying problem schemas before calculation. Several studies directly taught mathematical and word-problem vocabulary, used concrete or virtual manipulatives, incorporated arithmetic-fact practice, or prompted self-monitoring. The review shows that schema instruction is not a keyword strategy: its purpose is to connect story situations to invariant relationships that can transfer across surface details and unknown positions. It also exposes an important implementation gap. Many interventions were delivered one-to-one by researchers or graduate personnel, and only one study used a naturally occurring school change agent, limiting confidence about routine classroom scalability and teacher implementation. Samples, outcome measures, and component combinations varied, so the review does not isolate a single indispensable package. Nevertheless, it provides a current, developmentally focused map of practices that can make early word-problem reasoning explicit and visible. Future work should include kindergarten students, teacher-led group delivery, implementation fidelity, and measures of transfer beyond closely taught problem forms.",

"abstract_en": "This meta-analysis examined the concrete-representational-abstract, or CRA, sequence across 30 single-case intervention studies involving 116 learners from kindergarten through college. Approximately two thirds of the included studies involved participants with disabilities, and every study paired CRA with explicit instruction. The authors extracted phase data from published graphs and calculated Tau-BC, an effect-size index suited to single-case designs. The pooled effect was extremely large, Tau-BC = 0.9965, with a 95% confidence interval from 0.9947 to 0.9983, indicating almost complete nonoverlap between baseline and intervention performance across the analyzed records. Positive patterns appeared across mathematical content, operations, age ranges, and disability classifications. Moderator analyses compared integrated CRA, in which concrete, pictorial, and symbolic forms are linked within lessons, with non-integrated implementation, in which learners move through separate mastery phases. Non-integrated instruction was statistically higher by about 0.011, but the practical difference was very small and should not be treated as decisive. Disability status did not significantly moderate outcomes. The review supports CRA as a broadly promising scaffold: students first act on manipulatives, then interpret or draw representations, and finally solve using symbols while the teacher makes connections explicit. Yet the magnitude must be interpreted cautiously. The evidence base consisted of single-case rather than randomized group trials; effect data were often reconstructed from graphs; interventions, measures, and quality varied; and not all studies met every relevant What Works Clearinghouse design standard. Because explicit instruction was always bundled with CRA, the analysis also cannot attribute outcomes to representation sequencing alone.",

The authors located 28 U.S. group-design studies, yielding 90 effect sizes, and screened methodological quality with What Works Clearinghouse standards; 23 studies met standards without reservations and five met them with reservations. Across outcomes, the random-effects mean was 0.68, with a 95% confidence interval from 0.51 to 0.85. The wide prediction interval, from -0.36 to 1.80, also showed that future implementations may vary substantially. Meta-regression examined instructional and implementation characteristics. After correction for multiple testing, two practices were positively associated with larger effects: deliberate attention to mathematics language and systematic use of number lines. Interventions in elementary grades, those lasting more than 19 hours, and those providing ongoing support to interventionists also tended to show stronger results, although not every contrast established a causal moderator. Small-group formats were common and generally productive. Effects delivered by research personnel exceeded those delivered by school staff, a finding that underscores the implementation gap rather than proving that researchers are inherently better instructors. The review links several design principles: connect symbolic notation to visual magnitude, teach precise relational vocabulary, make representations explicit, and sustain professional learning during delivery. Because moderator analyses compare study-level features rather than randomly assigning instructional components, they cannot isolate a single active ingredient. The evidence also comes only from U.S. studies and includes heterogeneous outcomes and interventions. Even so, the synthesis offers a high-quality, recent basis for selecting rational-number practices for learners who struggle.",

"abstract_en": "This random-effects meta-analysis evaluated interventions designed to reduce mathematics anxiety and examined whether they also improved mathematics performance. Fifty studies contributed 75 anxiety effect sizes representing 9,125 participants; 30 studies contributed 41 performance effect sizes representing 6,097 participants. Across diverse ages and formats, interventions produced a moderate reduction in anxiety, Hedges' g = -0.467, and a moderate improvement in performance, g = 0.502. The authors classified programs as motivational, emotion-regulation, or cognitive-support interventions. Emotion-focused and cognitive-support approaches significantly reduced anxiety, while cognitive support showed the largest pooled performance estimate and emotion-focused approaches also improved performance. Motivational programs alone did not yield statistically reliable pooled effects in these subgroup analyses. Intervention length moderated anxiety outcomes: programs lasting more than three weeks had greater reductions than one-day programs. Students older than 12 showed larger anxiety reductions than younger children, although both age groups benefited. Study-quality categories were not statistically associated with outcomes, but only a small number of effects came from studies rated strong, and heterogeneity within several subgroups was considerable. These results argue against treating mathematics anxiety as a problem solved only through encouragement. Learners may need repeated successful mathematical experiences, explicit cognitive scaffolds, and tools for regulating worry or physiological arousal. Interpretation should remain cautious because the included studies varied widely in age, intervention, measures, comparison conditions, and methodological quality, and subgroup categories were not experimentally assigned. The meta-analysis nevertheless provides an authoritative quantitative basis for combining academic and emotional supports over sustained periods.",

"abstract_en": "This review updates and extends the evidence base for curriculum-based measurement in mathematics across preschool through grade 12. The authors located 99 studies and organized them by the three stages of a conventional CBM validation model: evidence for one-time screening and status decisions, evidence for repeated measurement of growth, and evidence that using the measures improves instructional decisions or student outcomes. Eighty-five studies, or 85.9% of the corpus, addressed screening; 40 studies, or 40.4%, examined repeated progress monitoring; and only five studies, or 5.1%, investigated instructional utility. Some studies contributed to more than one category. Compared with earlier reviews, the literature has expanded in early mathematics and secondary grades, yet elementary-grade measures still dominate. The review evaluates technical adequacy, score interpretation, sensitivity to growth, and the degree to which measures support actual decision making. Its central conclusion is not that mathematics CBM lacks value, but that evidence is distributed unevenly: schools have a comparatively large base for identifying current risk, a smaller but meaningful base for modeling growth, and very little direct evidence that teachers' use of CBM data reliably changes instruction or raises achievement. Variation in tasks, scoring, duration, and statistical methods also limits simple comparisons across measures. The authors call for studies that test decision rules, intervention changes, and student outcomes in authentic MTSS settings. For practitioners, the review supports selecting tools for a clearly specified purpose and warns against assuming that a valid screener automatically functions as a sensitive progress-monitoring instrument.",

"abstract_en": "This systematic review synthesizes mathematics interventions for primary-age students with intellectual disabilities, a population adjacent to but generally more impaired than learners with borderline intellectual functioning. The authors included twenty studies published from 2008 through 2020 that taught early numeracy, arithmetic, or arithmetic problem solving to children aged five to twelve. Seventeen studies used single-case designs and three used group-comparison designs, representing 135 learners in total. Across the corpus, fifteen interventions incorporated systematic or explicit instruction. Common components included teacher modeling and think-alouds, carefully ordered task analyses, repeated guided practice, immediate corrective feedback, prompting systems with planned fading, and concrete or pictorial manipulatives. Effective programs were structured as intensive learning sequences calibrated to each learner's current achievement rather than chronological grade expectations. Targets ranged from counting and number concepts to computation, money, and word-problem routines. Intervention dosage varied widely, from a handful of sessions to extended programs, and the authors did not find a simple linear relation between more sessions and stronger outcomes. Instead, instructional coherence, frequency, active responding, and individual adaptation appeared central. The review concludes that students with intellectual disabilities can learn meaningful mathematics when teaching is explicit, systematic, and supported by representations and feedback. Evidence quality remains limited: most studies involved very small samples, heterogeneous disability profiles and outcomes, few direct comparisons of competing methods, and little long-term maintenance or generalization assessment. Because the review did not specifically isolate IQ 70–85, transfer to borderline-intellectual-functioning or broadly defined slow-learner groups is an informed extrapolation rather than direct proof. That limitation itself identifies an important research gap.",

"abstract_en": "This What Works Clearinghouse practice guide translates intervention research into six recommendations for elementary educators serving students who struggle with mathematics. A multidisciplinary panel reviewed eligible studies under WWC standards and linked each recommendation to a documented evidence base; the guide reports 43 studies for systematic instruction, 16 for mathematical language, 28 for concrete and semi-concrete representations, 14 for number lines, 18 for word problems, and 27 for fluency-building activities. The panel recommends that intervention lessons follow a coherent instructional sequence with precise models, think-alouds, guided practice, corrective feedback, cumulative review, and planned opportunities for independent work. It further advises teachers to teach concise mathematical vocabulary and sentences, connect manipulatives and drawings explicitly to notation, and use the number line as a recurring representation rather than as an isolated activity. Word-problem instruction should foreground problem structures and reasoning about quantities instead of relying on keywords. Brief timed activities may support arithmetic fluency, but they should be only one component of instruction and should not displace conceptual teaching. All six recommendations receive a strong-evidence rating, although the guide cautions that teachers must adapt examples, dosage, and pacing to student data and local curricula. Because this is an evidence-synthesis and implementation document rather than a single experiment, it does not estimate one overall treatment effect. Its chief contribution is a research-grounded architecture for intensive, explicit, representation-rich intervention that can be implemented in small groups and monitored over time.",

"abstract_en": "This Campbell systematic review assessed targeted school-based interventions intended to improve reading or mathematics for students with, or at risk of, academic difficulties in kindergarten through grade 6. Searches covering literature through July 2018 identified 607 eligible studies, with 205 studies contributing usable data to meta-analysis: 202 compared intervention with control and three compared alternative interventions. The analyzed evidence represented 226,745 observations, and 93% of the 327 intervention-control contrasts were randomized, although most studies were judged to have moderate or high risk of bias. Across reading and mathematics, the pooled short-term effect was 0.30 standard deviations, with a 95% confidence interval from 0.25 to 0.34. The pooled effect at follow-up was 0.27, with a confidence interval from 0.17 to 0.36. Effects were heterogeneous. In adjusted comparisons, adult-led small-group instruction and peer-assisted instruction were among the most robust approaches, commonly showing effects around 0.35 to 0.45, and they tended to exceed effects associated with computer-assisted instruction, coaching, incentives, or progress monitoring alone. Mathematics and reading effects did not differ significantly overall. Some content-specific patterns, including comparatively strong fraction effects, were based on few studies and require caution. Longer-term evidence was also concentrated in small-group reading interventions. The review therefore supports targeted instruction as beneficial while warning against treating delivery format as a complete theory of change. Its most transferable lesson for mathematics intervention is that responsive human instruction in small groups, or carefully structured peer assistance, should combine active practice and feedback with sound content design.",

"abstract_en": "This meta-analysis estimated the impact of Tier 2 mathematics interventions for students identified as having mathematics difficulties and examined conditions associated with stronger outcomes. The synthesis included 39 experimental or quasi-experimental studies, yielding 40 independent samples and 61 intervention groups. Because many studies contributed multiple dependent effects, the authors used robust variance estimation rather than treating every effect as independent. Across the evidence base, Tier 2 intervention produced a statistically significant, moderate improvement in mathematics achievement, with an average Hedges' g of 0.41. Moderator analyses suggested two practically meaningful patterns: interventions that explicitly taught the underlying structure of problems were associated with stronger effects, and groups of two or three students tended to outperform larger intervention groups. Effects were smaller when assessed with standardized measures than with researcher-developed or closely aligned measures, an important caution when interpreting program success. Several other coded characteristics, including students' mathematics-difficulty designation, grade level, interventionist type, intervention duration, and study-quality indicators, did not reliably explain variation in effect sizes. The findings support supplemental small-group instruction as an effective Tier 2 response, but they also indicate substantial diversity in intervention content, samples, and outcome measures. Moderator results are correlational across studies and should not be treated as direct experimental comparisons of group size or instructional features. For schools, the review offers both a realistic benchmark for expected achievement gains and a strong rationale for keeping groups small and making mathematical problem structures visible.",

"abstract_en": "This classroom randomized trial evaluated a compact fraction-sense intervention for 52 sixth graders who had, or were considered at risk for, mathematics difficulties. Twenty-five students received the experimental program and 27 continued with business-as-usual support. The program comprised 21 lessons delivered during the school's regular intervention period in groups of four for about 45 minutes. Rather than surveying many fraction procedures, lessons concentrated on fraction magnitude, equivalence, and arithmetic through a carefully sequenced set of denominators. A linear board-game activity, the Color Run Race, repeatedly required students to locate, compare, and combine fractions on a number line while receiving guided explanation and feedback. Outcomes assessed fraction number-line estimation, broader fraction concepts, and fraction arithmetic immediately after instruction and again seven weeks later. The intervention produced large immediate advantages on number-line estimation and fraction concepts and a meaningful advantage on arithmetic. At delayed testing, gains in number-line estimation and concepts were maintained, whereas the arithmetic advantage was no longer statistically reliable. The pattern suggests that repeated work with magnitude and spatial representations established durable conceptual knowledge, but procedural calculation needed more distributed review after the core lessons ended. The study is especially useful for practice because instruction occurred in an authentic school intervention block and used a feasible four-student format. Nevertheless, the sample was small, the study involved one grade band, and researchers rather than ordinary classroom teachers appear to have had substantial involvement. Results therefore support the instructional principles more strongly than they establish effectiveness under broad, routine implementation.",

"abstract_en": "This preregistered, cluster-randomized classroom trial tested interleaved mathematics practice over four months in 54 seventh-grade classes. Classes were assigned to practice assignments that either grouped problems of the same type together or interleaved multiple problem types. Instructional content and total problem exposure were designed to be comparable, and both groups later completed a common interleaved review. About one month after the practice phase, students took an unannounced test covering the learned material. Mean accuracy was 61% in the interleaved condition and 38% in the blocked condition, a large difference of d = 0.83. The benefit is theoretically important because interleaving changes what students must do during practice. A blocked worksheet reveals the applicable procedure through repetition, whereas a mixed worksheet requires learners to identify the problem type, retrieve the appropriate strategy, and discriminate between similar procedures. Interleaving also spaces encounters with each category over time, potentially strengthening later retrieval. Teachers implemented the materials without specialized training and reported generally favorable views, increasing the practical relevance of the trial. At the same time, interleaved assignments took students longer, the outcome was researcher constructed, randomization occurred by class rather than student, and participants were not selected specifically for mathematics difficulty. The study therefore demonstrates a robust retention advantage in mainstream seventh-grade classrooms but does not establish that an identical format is optimal for severely struggling learners. Such students may first need explicit teaching and partially mixed sets before full interleaving, with error monitoring to prevent repeated selection of the wrong strategy.",

"abstract_en": "This meta-analysis evaluates whether digital interventions improve mathematics outcomes for children identified with mathematical learning difficulties or disabilities. The authors systematically searched for randomized controlled studies published from 2003 through 2019 and retained fifteen studies involving 1,073 participants. Samples ranged from preschool to secondary school, although most studies were conducted in primary school; the mean participant age was about 7.6 years. Programs included educational video games, drill-and-practice software, and computer tutoring systems, with intervention duration averaging roughly eight weeks but varying substantially across studies. A random-effects model yielded a moderate mean effect size of 0.55 in favor of digital intervention, indicating that technology-supported practice can improve assessed mathematical performance for struggling learners. Effects were heterogeneous, however, so the pooled estimate should not be treated as a guarantee for any individual product. Moderator analyses found no reliable advantage for video-game formats over digital drilling or tutoring, and no reliable difference between preschool and primary-school delivery. These results suggest that the instructional content, adaptation, feedback, and amount of productive practice matter more than game-like presentation alone. The review also highlights methodological limitations: many trials had small samples, programs and outcome measures differed widely, follow-up evidence was sparse, and only a small number of studies allowed each moderator comparison. The paper therefore supports digital tools as a potentially useful component of intervention, not as an autonomous replacement for diagnostic teaching or teacher-guided conceptual instruction. It also identifies a need to examine motivational and emotional outcomes alongside achievement in future trials.",

"abstract_en": "This evidence-based clinical review summarizes the German S3 guideline on developmental dyscalculia, developed through systematic literature searches and a consensus process involving twenty professional societies. Searches covered symptoms, diagnostic criteria and instruments, comorbidity, and intervention studies; recommendations were then graded through formal expert agreement. The review defines diagnosis as a multi-source decision rather than a single low test score. Mathematical performance should generally fall at least one standard deviation below the age- or grade-appropriate mean, while developmental history, standardized testing across more than one mathematical domain, clinical examination, intelligence, vision and hearing, and psychosocial context are considered together. An IQ–achievement discrepancy is not required. The evidence indicates broad difficulties in number and quantity processing, basic operations, fact retrieval, and word problems, often accompanied by slow performance. Intervention evidence reviewed for the guideline shows a moderate average benefit, with the best outcomes from mathematics-specific treatment begun early, delivered by a trained practitioner, and adjusted to the learner's individual profile. Non-specific approaches such as working-memory training alone are not supported as substitutes for mathematical instruction. The paper also emphasizes frequent co-occurrence with dyslexia, attention-deficit/hyperactivity symptoms, anxiety, depression, and externalizing behavior. Its principal limitation for classroom use is that much of the diagnostic tool discussion is tied to German-language instruments and health-service structures. Nevertheless, its assessment logic and treatment principles are transferable: document the pattern and persistence of mathematical difficulty, rule out alternative explanations, screen for comorbid needs, and monitor response to focused instruction.",

"abstract_en": "This pre-post intervention study investigated whether intensive mathematics tutoring could reduce anxiety in third graders and alter neural systems associated with threat. Forty-six children aged approximately seven to nine entered an eight-week, one-to-one program delivered three times per week for 40 to 50 minutes. Tutoring targeted addition and subtraction through number families, decomposition strategies, manipulatives, games, cumulative flash-card practice, and supportive feedback. Children completed an early mathematics-anxiety scale and arithmetic measures before and after tutoring; usable behavioral data were available for 37 children, and a smaller subset provided high-quality functional MRI data. Overall anxiety decreased, but the interaction showed that change was concentrated among children classified as highly anxious before tutoring. High-anxiety children also showed reduced amygdala reactivity and normalization of connectivity between emotion-related and frontoparietal regions during arithmetic. Larger reductions in amygdala response were associated with larger reductions in reported anxiety. Both high- and low-anxiety groups improved arithmetic accuracy and response speed, indicating that the academic program supported learning even when baseline anxiety was low. The findings are consistent with an exposure account: repeated, scaffolded, successful encounters with mathematics may weaken threat responses while building competence. However, this was not a randomized controlled trial and had no untreated comparison group, so maturation, repeated testing, attention from a tutor, or regression to the mean cannot be ruled out. The neuroimaging sample was small, groups were defined with a median split, and long-term maintenance was not tested. The study offers a plausible mechanism and a concrete tutoring model, not definitive evidence that the full package alone caused neural or emotional change.",

"abstract_en": "This randomized classroom study evaluated an eight-week number-sense intervention for 121 kindergarten children attending five high-poverty urban schools and considered at elevated risk for later mathematics difficulty. Children were randomly assigned to the targeted intervention or business-as-usual instruction. The program was delivered in small groups for thirty minutes, three times each week, across twenty-four sessions. Lessons explicitly developed whole-number competencies through counting, numeral recognition, comparisons of quantities and symbols, ordering, and composing or decomposing sets. The curriculum used a stable set of visual representations, including chips, dot configurations, fingers, and a linear number list, while teachers introduced relational vocabulary systematically and elicited verbal explanations. Activities were sequenced from concrete quantities toward more symbolic tasks and included games, brief review, guided practice, and informal checks of learning. After adjusting for baseline number sense, intervention children made significantly greater gains than controls on a broad early-numeracy measure at immediate posttest. Their advantage remained evident at a delayed assessment approximately six weeks later, indicating some durability. They also outperformed controls on a standardized calculation measure immediately after intervention, providing evidence of transfer beyond the taught activities. The study's strengths include random assignment, delivery under authentic school conditions, delayed testing, and a clearly specified instructional sequence. Limits include recruitment from one district, a comparison condition that varied with normal classroom practice, and a sample defined primarily by socioeconomic risk rather than a formal mathematics-learning-disability diagnosis. Even so, the results show that coherent, language-rich small-group instruction can improve foundational number competencies before persistent failure becomes established.",

"abstract_en": "This paper describes the instructional architecture and pilot evaluation of Calcularis, an adaptive computer program for children with developmental dyscalculia or marked mathematics difficulty. The program links verbal number words, Arabic symbols, concrete quantities, and spatial positions on number lines, then extends these representations to addition and subtraction. A dynamic learner model selects prerequisite, current, or more advanced tasks after each response; a bug library routes recurring errors to targeted remediation with blocks, place-value representations, transcoding, or bridging-through-ten practice. Forty-one German-speaking children in Grades 2–5, averaging around the tenth percentile in arithmetic, were matched and quasi-randomly assigned to immediate training or a waiting group. Training was prescribed for twenty minutes per day, five days per week. Thirty-two children provided sufficient data for the primary analyses, with the immediate group training for twelve weeks and the waiting group beginning after six weeks. Relative to the waiting period, six weeks of training produced significant improvement in subtraction and reduced variability on the 0–10 number-line task; effect sizes were medium to large. Addition showed a favorable trend, while non-symbolic comparison and estimation did not improve reliably. Some additional gains appeared when training continued to twelve weeks, especially for broader number-line ranges. Children generally rated the activities as enjoyable and appropriately difficult. The design supports individualized trajectories, but the evidence remains preliminary: attrition reduced the sample, assignment was not fully random, and the comparison was a waitlist rather than an active alternative intervention. The study therefore demonstrates feasibility and domain-specific promise, not definitive superiority of Calcularis.",

Children screened as at risk for mathematics difficulty were assigned to speeded practice, nonspeeded practice, or no tutoring; the analytic groups included 195, 190, and 206 students, respectively. Tutoring was individual, lasted 30 minutes three times per week for 16 weeks, and devoted about 25 minutes to explicit work on number relations, decomposition, arithmetic principles, and problem solving. During the final five minutes, the speeded condition used brief, high-response activities with immediate feedback and roughly 40 practice opportunities, whereas the nonspeeded condition used games emphasizing thoughtful strategy use with about seven opportunities. Both tutoring conditions outperformed the no-tutoring group on arithmetic, two-digit calculation, number knowledge, and word-problem outcomes. Speeded practice produced additional advantages over nonspeeded practice on arithmetic-fact performance and two-digit calculations, but not on broader number knowledge or word problems. Growth in efficient fact retrieval partially mediated the speeded condition's effects, and speeded practice was especially helpful in compensating for weak reasoning ability. Neither tutoring form changed measured attitudes, motivation, or effort. The findings distinguish conceptual instruction from the extra contribution of dense retrieval practice: rich number teaching improved a range of outcomes, while brief speeded practice added efficiency on calculation-related tasks. However, speeded and nonspeeded activities differed in both time pressure and number of response opportunities, so the study cannot attribute the advantage solely to speed. The intensive one-to-one, research-supported format also limits direct claims about ordinary classroom delivery.",

"abstract_en": "This randomized controlled study tested a 12-week fractions program for 259 fourth graders identified as at risk because their whole-number calculation performance fell below the 35th percentile. Students were assigned to the experimental intervention or their schools' business-as-usual fractions instruction. The intervention was delivered to groups of three students for 30 minutes, three times per week. It treated a fraction primarily as a measure of magnitude, used number lines as a central representation, connected the size of a unit fraction to its denominator, and paired conceptual explanation with systematic practice in comparing, ordering, and calculating fractions. Lessons also incorporated explicit instruction, cumulative review, and structured opportunities for students to explain their reasoning. Experimental students outperformed controls on every conceptual and procedural outcome, with reported effect sizes ranging from 0.29 to 2.50. Particularly large advantages appeared for fraction comparison, number-line understanding, and procedural calculations, and the program reduced gaps between at-risk learners and a representative sample of classmates. Mediation analyses indicated that growth in the measurement interpretation of fractions accounted for intervention effects on several outcomes, supporting the proposed instructional mechanism. The researchers also examined whether domain-general abilities constrained response; the structured program often compensated for limitations that predicted weaker learning in ordinary instruction. The study therefore provides unusually strong evidence that an intensive, coherent fraction sequence can improve both meaning and procedure. Important limits are that interventionists were research staff, the sample was confined to fourth grade, and the comparison condition varied across schools, so implementation by regular teachers requires careful replication and fidelity support.",

"abstract_en": "This randomized study directly addresses mathematics learning in adolescents with mild to borderline intellectual disability, a group that often completes school without secure basic calculation skills. Fifty-eight students aged twelve to fifteen in special education were assigned to a five-week computerized mathematics-practice condition or treatment as usual. The study assessed mathematics performance and several executive-function measures before and after the intervention. It also examined whether executive functions were associated with arithmetic and whether repeated mathematics practice transferred to those domain-general cognitive skills. Mathematics performance improved over time in both the experimental and treatment-as-usual groups, with no overall differential treatment effect. Within the experimental condition, however, adolescents who practiced frequently improved more than control participants, suggesting that achieved dosage and engagement may be more informative than assignment alone. Visuospatial memory was positively related to addition and subtraction performance, whereas the program produced no detectable transfer to executive functions. These findings caution against expecting a short computerized drill to change broad cognition or automatically outperform ordinary special-education instruction. At the same time, they show that sustained participation in focused practice can be associated with basic-skill improvement even during adolescence. The relatively small sample, short duration, variation in actual practice frequency, and per-protocol nature of the high-practice finding limit causal interpretation. The paper is especially valuable because direct intervention research for students in the borderline-intellectual-functioning range is scarce. It supports realistic goals: increase opportunities for successful, repeated mathematical responding, monitor actual dosage closely, connect visual-spatial supports to arithmetic, and assess mathematics outcomes rather than assuming executive-function transfer.",

"abstract_en": "This Institute of Education Sciences and What Works Clearinghouse practice guide converts research and expert judgment into five recommendations for fraction instruction from kindergarten through Grade 8. It is an evidence-synthesis and implementation resource rather than a single intervention trial, and it explicitly rates the strength of evidence behind each recommendation. The panel advises teachers to begin with children's informal knowledge of equal sharing and proportionality, using both collections of objects and single wholes. Its central recommendation is to treat fractions as numbers that extend the whole-number system and to use number lines repeatedly for locating, ordering, comparing, and establishing equivalence among fractions. The guide also recommends connecting visual models and estimation to computational procedures so that students understand why algorithms work and can judge whether answers are reasonable. For ratios, rates, and proportions, conceptual strategies and visual representations should precede cross-multiplication. Finally, professional development should strengthen teachers' own fraction knowledge and their ability to diagnose misconceptions. Evidence was rated moderate for recognizing fractions as numbers and for making computation procedures meaningful, and minimal for the recommendations on informal sharing, proportional reasoning, and professional development. These labels are important: the document combines the best available studies in 2010 with panel expertise and should not be interpreted as showing that every suggested practice has equally strong causal support. Its enduring value is the coherent progression it offers—sharing to magnitude, magnitude to number-line relations, and conceptual relations to justified procedures—along with concrete classroom examples and warnings about common whole-number misconceptions.",

"abstract_en": "This randomized controlled study tested whether schema-broadening instruction could improve second graders' word-problem learning and their ability to represent problem structure with algebraic equations. Eighteen teachers and 270 students participated in a 16-week comparison between conventional word-problem instruction and an intervention that organized problems by underlying schemas while deliberately varying superficial features. The schema-broadening condition taught students to identify quantitative relationships, use a structured solution routine, and connect the unknown quantity and other problem elements to an overarching algebraic equation. Analyses that accounted for the nesting of students within classrooms showed superior word-problem outcomes for students receiving schema-broadening instruction. Examination of student work also indicated that these students represented structural features more successfully with algebraic equations, providing evidence that carefully designed arithmetic intervention can support emerging algebraic reasoning rather than merely train answers to familiar items. The study is particularly useful because it targeted transfer: students encountered variations in wording, question location, and irrelevant surface details instead of practicing only one fixed template. Results do not imply that second graders need formal symbolic algebra detached from meaning; equations functioned as representations of relationships in accessible story contexts. Limits include implementation in a bounded grade and instructional setting, reliance on the study's particular measures, and the inability to determine which component of the multicomponent package produced the gains. Even so, the randomized classroom design offers strong evidence that explicit schema comparison and relational equation writing can outperform conventional practice.",

"abstract_en": "This Institute of Education Sciences practice guide presents eight recommendations for building a mathematics Response to Intervention system in elementary and middle schools. Drawing on experimental and quasi-experimental intervention studies, measurement research, and expert judgment, the panel addresses the full sequence from universal screening to increasingly intensive support. Schools are advised to screen all students, use reliable measures, and provide Tier 2 and Tier 3 instruction that concentrates on whole-number concepts in kindergarten through grade 5 and rational-number concepts in grades 4 through 8. Intensive lessons should be explicit and systematic: the teacher models solution processes, verbalizes reasoning, provides guided practice and corrective feedback, and schedules cumulative review. The guide also recommends direct teaching of common word-problem structures and consistent use of visual representations, with explicit links among objects, diagrams, language, and symbols. Approximately ten minutes per intervention session may be allocated to fluent retrieval of basic arithmetic facts, while motivational supports can be embedded in Tier 2 and Tier 3 instruction. Progress should be measured regularly with efficient, technically adequate tools, and the resulting trend should guide decisions about continuation, adaptation, or intensification. Evidence strength varies across recommendations, so the report distinguishes empirical support from panel consensus and provides implementation examples rather than promising uniform effects. Although published before current MTSS terminology became widespread, the guide remains a foundational operational model: identify risk early, teach a focused sequence in small groups, monitor response repeatedly, and intensify instruction when growth is inadequate.",

"abstract_en": "This article combines a focused review of computer-assisted early mathematics intervention with a randomized comparison of two theoretically distinct games for low-numeracy kindergarten children. Thirty low-performing children were randomly assigned to The Number Race or Graphogame Math and trained daily for three weeks. The Number Race emphasized approximate and symbolic magnitude comparison, adjusting numerical distance and representation to the learner. Graphogame Math emphasized exact small numerosities by repeatedly matching spoken number words with dot patterns and Arabic numerals. A separate group of thirty typically performing children completed the same pre- and posttests but did not constitute an untreated low-performing control. Outcomes assessed verbal counting, number comparison, object counting, simple arithmetic, and rapid automatized naming as a control task. Both trained groups improved in number comparison relative to the developmental change observed among typically performing peers. Neither game produced reliable improvement in the broader measures of counting, object enumeration, or arithmetic, and the two programs did not show a clear differential advantage. Thus, a brief, focused digital intervention appeared to strengthen the skill most directly practiced, but transfer to untrained early numeracy domains was limited. The design improves on uncontrolled game studies by randomizing struggling learners between two active treatments and measuring several outcomes. Nevertheless, causal claims about training versus no training remain constrained because there was no untreated low-numeracy group, the sample was small, and the intervention lasted only three weeks. The study cautions against assuming that gains in magnitude comparison automatically generalize to counting and calculation, and it argues for longer, carefully sequenced interventions that deliberately connect multiple numerical representations and skills.",

"abstract_en": "This meta-analysis investigated which instructional components improve mathematics outcomes for students with learning disabilities. The authors synthesized 42 randomized or quasi-experimental intervention studies and coded features in four broad domains: instructional and curriculum design, formative assessment and teacher feedback, formative assessment and student feedback, and peer-assisted learning. Most coded components produced statistically reliable average effects, with mean effects across significant components ranging from approximately 0.21 to 1.56. Two design features were especially important in hierarchical analyses. Explicit instruction contributed unique explanatory power when lessons included clear demonstrations, teacher verbalization of reasoning, guided practice, feedback, and cumulative review. Teaching heuristics, or structured routines for analyzing and solving classes of problems, also showed a large and distinctive association with achievement. By contrast, student goal-setting as a feedback procedure and within-class peer-assisted learning did not show statistically significant average effects in this synthesis. The analysis demonstrates that intervention labels alone are less informative than the instructional ingredients actually delivered. At the same time, the evidence should not be read as a simple causal ranking of isolated components: studies frequently combined several practices, outcomes and samples varied, and the number of comparisons for some features was limited. The review predates many contemporary MTSS studies but remains a decisive synthesis because it connects broad intervention effectiveness to observable teaching actions. Its results support structured, teacher-led instruction while also showing value in helping learners organize unfamiliar problems through generalizable solution routines.",

"abstract_en": "This foundational review examined mathematics progress-monitoring measures available from preschool through secondary school and evaluated the maturity of their technical evidence. The authors distinguished two broad measurement strategies. Curriculum-sampling measures draw tasks across the year's curriculum, whereas robust-indicator approaches use a smaller class of tasks intended to represent broad mathematics competence. Studies were organized by developmental stage, measure type, reliability, criterion validity, sensitivity to growth, and evidence that scores could inform instructional decisions. Most of the literature concerned elementary students; evidence for early mathematics and secondary settings was sparse, and the review found no high-school progress-monitoring studies meeting its scope at that time. Across measures, reliability was generally acceptable, but criterion-related validity was less consistent than in the reading-CBM literature. The authors also found little consensus about which task format best represents mathematics growth and limited evidence that educators could use score trends to improve instruction and outcomes. These limitations reflect the multidimensional and curriculum-dependent nature of mathematics: a brief probe can sample computation accurately while missing conceptual understanding or other strands. The review therefore supports repeated, efficient measurement but rejects the idea that any single probe automatically provides a complete picture. Although the evidence base has expanded since 2007, the paper remains important for defining the technical questions a progress-monitoring system must answer: whether alternate forms are comparable, whether scores are reliable, whether slopes reflect genuine growth, whether the measure predicts meaningful outcomes, and whether resulting data change teaching.",

"abstract_en": "This early proof-of-concept study tested The Number Race, an adaptive computer game designed from the hypothesis that dyscalculia involves impaired number sense or weak access from symbols to quantity. Nine children aged seven to nine with substantial mathematics difficulties completed approximately thirty minutes of training per day, four days per week, for five weeks. The software repeatedly required children to compare numerical quantities while adapting difficulty, presentation format, response deadlines, and arithmetic complexity to performance. Before and after training, the researchers assessed counting, numeral transcoding, base-ten understanding, enumeration, addition, subtraction, and symbolic and non-symbolic numerical comparison. Following roughly ten hours of practice, response speed improved by several hundred milliseconds on subitizing and number-comparison measures. Accuracy on non-rule subtraction problems increased by an average of twenty-three percentage points, suggesting some transfer from magnitude comparison to manipulation of quantities. Addition and base-ten understanding did not improve, which shows that gains were selective rather than a broad rise in mathematics achievement. The game was designed to keep success rates high and provide intensive individualized practice, features that remain relevant to contemporary digital intervention. However, the study was an uncontrolled open trial with only nine participants, and the children had mathematics difficulty rather than a uniformly established clinical dyscalculia diagnosis. Practice effects, maturation, and concurrent instruction therefore cannot be ruled out. The findings are best treated as evidence that adaptive magnitude training is feasible and may improve proximal number-processing skills, while larger controlled trials are necessary to establish causal effects and generalization.",
